Acupuncture has been endorsed by the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization for a variety of aliments, as noted below.

The NIH identifies strong evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness in managing: 

  • Chronic Pain: Specifically low back painneck pain, and osteoarthritis (particularly of the knee).

  • Headaches: Including both migraines and tension-type headaches.

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Effectively treats nausea induced by chemotherapy, surgical anesthesia, and pregnancy.

  • Postoperative Pain: Often used to reduce pain after surgery and minimize the need for opioid medications.

Acupuncture may also be helpful for the following conditions, though the evidence for some is considered less definitive or is still being researched: 

  • Musculoskeletal Issues: Tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Women's Health: Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) and labor pain.

  • Respiratory Conditions: Asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

  • Mental Health & Sleep: Anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

  • Addiction: Sometimes used in comprehensive programs for smoking cessation or substance use disorders.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as a valid form of traditional medicine, publishing guidelines on safety, training, and standardizing point locations. WHO reports indicate that acupuncture is effective for treating over 100 conditions, including chronic pain, nausea, and allergic rhinitis

  • Evidence-Based Efficacy: Controlled trials have shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, knee pain, and headache.
